SHORT COURSES ON SURVEY METHODS The Centre for Applied Social Surveys* (CASS), with support from the ESRC, will be providing a series of short courses for social scientists on various aspects of social surveys. 1. Basic Survey Data Analysis I & II 20-24 January 1997, at the University of Southampton Tutors: Pamela Campanelli and Susan Purdon (SCPR) The first module will be a 'refresher' on basic statistical principles, covering confidence intervals, t-tests for means and proportions, oneway anova and contingency tables. The second module will cover correlation, simple and multiple regression and logistic regression. Participants are welcome to attend one or both modules. 2. Design and Administration of Quantitative Standardised Interview Surveys 17-18 February 1997, in London Tutors: Roger Thomas and Pamela Campanelli (SCPR) The course will cover questionnaire design, measuring behaviour, attitudes and values, the roles of the interviewer and project management and administration of interview surveys. 3. Design and Administration of Postal and Self-Completion Surveys 19-20 February 1997, in London Tutors: Peter Lynn, Pamela Campanelli and Roger Thomas (SCPR) Questionnaire and question design will be covered in this course, as well as special features of self-completion surveys, minimising nonresponse, and planning, costing and timetabling. 4. Handling Non-Response 10-12 March 1997, in Southampton Tutors: Chris Skinner (University of Southampton) and Pamela Campanelli (SCPR) The course will review methods for handling both unit and item level nonresponse in surveys. Methods for reducing nonresponse will be considered, together with methods for compensating for nonresponse using weighting, imputation and incomplete data modelling. 5. Exact Methods for the Analysis of Large Sparse Contingency Tables 16-18 April 1997, at the University of Southampton Tutors: Peter Smith and John `Mac' McDonald (University of Southampton) Standard methods of contingency table analysis, such as Pearson chi-squared tests, break down when tables are large and many of the cell counts are small. This course will provide a practical introduction to exact methods and associated software for use by researchers faced by such data. 6. Categorical Data Analysis 4-6 June 1997, at the University of Southampton Tutor: Ian Diamond (University of Southampton) The course will cover statistical analysis methods used for modelling categorical response variables, including logistic regression, multinomial logistic regression and discrete time hazards modelling. For further information on any of the above courses contact Beccy Bundock, Department of Social Statistics, University of Southampton, Southampton SO17 1BJ.
