Two Short Courses: BASIC SURVEY DATA ANALYSIS I & II 20-21 and 21-23 January 1997 run by the Centre for Applied Social Surveys at the University of Southampton Tutors: Pamela Campanelli and Susan Purdon Target Audience: These courses are aimed at researchers who need to perform basic analyses on data from sample surveys, especially those in the social, economic, educational and medical sciences. For the Analysis I course, participants should have a basic familiarity with statistical concepts through a previous introductory course or equivalent experience. This "refresher" course provides a good background to the Basic Data Analysis II course which runs from 21-23 January 1997. For the Analysis II course, participants are expected to have a basic knowledge of simple statistical methods. They will previously have taken a course in introductory statistics and/or have completed Basic Survey Data Analysis I The instructors are present in between and after sessions to discuss data analysis issues arising in individual participants' research. Participants are welcome to bring their own datasets so that they can try out course ideas and techniques on their own data. The number of participants is limited to faciliate such support. Participants bringing their own data should indicate the nature of such data on the registration form. The Instructors: Pamela Campanelli is a Research Director at the Survey Methods Centre of SCPR. She specialises in research on survey instruments, data collection and interviewing techniques and regularly teach in this area. She runs a major ESRC-funded research programme on non-response and interviewing techniques. Prior to joining SCPR she worked on large-scale surveys at the University of Michigan, the US Bureau of the Census and the British Household Panel Study. Susan Purdon is a Senior Researcher at the Survey Methods Centre of SCPR. She is a survey statistician with particular interests in sample design and survey analysis. Prior to joining SCPR she worked for the Department of the Environment and Scottish Homes. Course Materials: Participants will receive written course notes, copies of overhead transparencies and a reading list. Both courses will have a strong practical emphasis, with regular sessions on computers enabling participants to work through examples in SPSS for Windows. Credit Accumulation and Transfer: Some participants may wish to transfer the academic credit gained from this course to a university degree programme. The Analysis I course has been approved by the University of Southampton for the award of 3 CATS points at postgraduate level, while the Analysis II course has been approved for 5 CATS points. To qualify for CATS points participants will need to undertake assessed work. Please indicate on the registration form if you wish to do this. Location: University of Southampton Main Campus along University Road in Highfield, Southampton. During the course participants can be contacted via the Department of Social Statistics (Tel: 01703 593048, Fax: 01703 593846). Accommodation: Applicants wishing to reserve accommodation are asked to contact the hotel or guesthouse directly (a list of hotels can be sent to you). Deadlines and Refunds: Course places are limited and early registration is recommended. Payment must be made by 7 days before the course. No refunds can be made for cancellations made later than 7 days before the start of the course. CASS is an ESRC Resource Centre hosted by SCPR and the University of Southampton, with the University of Surrey -------------------------------------------------------------- BASIC SURVEY DATA ANALYSIS I Course Objectives: o To develop an understanding of the basic principles of statistical analysis. o To enable participants to employ appropriate methods of presenting data in research reports and papers. Course Content: o Overview of analysis considerations o Confidence intervals for means and proportions o Setting up and testing hypotheses o Tests of statistical significance o Two sample tests for means and proportions o One way analysis of variance o Association in tables Fee: The fee for the Analysis I course is stlg 185. Because of ESRC support, a number of bursaries are available which reduce the fee to stlg 35 - applicants must be full-time students, UK academic staff or ESRC-funded researchers. Duration: The Analysis I course will begin with coffee and registration at 10.00 a.m. Monday 20 January and end at 12.30p.m. Tuesday 21 January 1997 (followed by lunch). Those participants who wish to also attend the follow-on Survey Data Analysis II should note that this will start at 2.00p.m. Preparatory Reading for Analysis I course: Participants who feel particularly "rusty" could skim through any introductory level textbook on statistical methods. Some examples are o The Cartoon Guide to Statistics, Larry Gonich & Woolcott Smith, Harper Collins 1993 ISBN 0-06-273102-5. o Introductory Data Analysis for Social Scientists, David Rose & Oriel Sullivan, Open University Press, 2nd Edition 1996, ISBN 0-335-19617-9. o Understanding Statistics in the Behavioural Sciences, Robert R Pagano, West Publishing company, 3rd Edition 1990, ISBN 0-314-66792-x. o Basic Statistics for the Behavioural Sciences, Gary W Heiman, Houghton Mifflin Company, 1992, ISBN 0-395-51546-7. o Quantitative Data Analysis for Social Scientists, Alan Bryman & Duncan Cramer, Routledge, 1990, ISBN 0-415-02665-2. --------------------------------------------------- BASIC SURVEY DATA ANALYSIS II Course Objectives: o To develop a practical understanding of the basic principles of covariance, correlation, simple and multiple regression and logistic regression. o To develop an understanding of assumptions behind the models, the impact of violations, how violations can be diagnosed, and possible solutions. o To enable participants to employ appropriate methods in analysing their data. Course Content: o Covariance and correlation o Simple linear regression o Interpreting computer output o Impact of violation of model assumptions and possible solutions o Multiple regression o Procedures for selecting variables o Logistic regression o Interpreting the coefficients Both courses will have a strong practical emphasis, with regular sessions on computers enabling participants to work through examples in SPSS for Windows. Fee: The fee for the Analysis II course is stlg 300. Because of ESRC support, a number of bursaries are available which reduce the fee to stlg 60 - applicants must be full-time students, UK academic staff or ESRC-funded researchers. Preparatory Reading for Analysis 2 course: It is not assumed that participants have any prior knowledge of the topics, however, for those who would like to do preparatory reading the following references may be useful. Please note that this reading is optional and it will not be assumed that participants have done any preparatory reading. - Neter, J., Wasserman, W., and Kutner, M. (1985).
