Dear George,

Many thanks for your reply.  So far you are the only person to respond to my
query.  It seems that the origin of the gap theory is shrouded in mysterry -
perhaps because no one has yet felt the need to examine it in detail except
Arthur Custance ( and a few others) and Custance dodn't do a very good job.
 Most books I have read cite other secondary or tertiary works as their
source of information.  I have so far found no one who actually cites
Episcopius or J G Rosenmueller (1736-1815) who first presented it as a
scientitifc theory in his book "Antiquissima telluris historia" (1776).
 Maybe someone else on the list will be able to throw more light on the
subject.
