Hello!
I did a little research ( I asked a friend who is a cab driver.) and this
is what I found. In Paris, in 1648 a man named Sauvage started a carriage
rental business. For the business he purchased a building on St. Martin
which was called the Hotel De St. Fiacre, which had a statue of the saint
above the door. The cab drivers began placing images of the saint on the
carriages and fiacre became the term used to refer to all rented carriages.
