George:

This info can be found in the *Oxford Historical Register,
1200- 1900* (Oxford, 1900) and its supplements. To save you a trip
to the library, I'll summarise. An Act of Parliament in 1840 annexed
two canonries at Christ Church to professorships which Queen Victoria
intended to found, one in Pastoral Theology and one in Ecclesiastical
History. Letters Patent were issued in 1842 and the holders of the
RP since that time have been:
1842 Robert Hussey
1856 A.P. Stanley (a notable Dean of Westminster)
1864 W. W. Shirley
1867 H. L. Mansel
1868 William Bright
1901 Charles Bigg
1908 E.W. Watson
1934 Claude Jenkins
1959 S.L. Greenslade (historian of the Early Church, whose works are
no doubt well known to members of this list)
1972 John McManners (historian of c18-France)

McManners, who held the post when I was an undergraduate, retired in
1984 (see *Crockford's Clerical Directory*). I don't recall who
succeeded him. According to the 1995-96 Oxford University
*Calendar*, Peter Hinchliff has held the post since 1992 and retires
in 1996. That would explain the advertisement.
