Referring to Durham as an episcopal church should not cause us to ignore
its cathedral's eventual role as a monastic foundation. How wealthy
would a monastic cathedral like Durham or Canterbury be compared to a
monastery like St. Alban's?

David Knowles did a useful set of rankings in The Monastic Order. Christ Church
Canterbury was at the top by some way as far as I can remember (I don't have my
copy of Knowles here). I suspect that Durham was rather richer than St Albans
but I don't have the information to hand and don't want to speculate. Neither
Durham nor St Albans was poor.
