the practical design of samples for social surveys, and think
critically about these.

Course Content:
- Introduction to Sampling Methods
- Key Issues in Sample Design
- Sampling Frames
- Sample Estimates and Confidence Intervals
- Stratification: Sampling Fractions, Implicit Stratification
- Multistage Sampling
- Problems Posed by Complex Surveys

The course will include workshop sessions so that participants can
work through practical exercises.

Target Audience:
The course is aimed at researchers who need to use sample surveys,
especially those in the social, economic, educational and medical
sciences. Familiarity with elementary statistical concepts will be
assumed.

Course Materials:
Participants will receive written course notes, copies of overhead
transparencies and a reading list.

 The Instructors:
Peter Lynn is Deputy Director of the Survey Methods Centre of Social
and Community Planning Research. He specialises in sampling
techniques for surveys and in postal survey methodology. He is well
known for his expertise and practical knowledge of survey sampling
issues and teaches many courses in this area.

Ray Chambers is Professor of Social Statistics at the University of
Southampton. His research interests lie in survey analysis and
interpretation, and computer intensive methods in statistics. He is
committed to consulting with business and government organisations on
ways of using the statistical method to improve performance.

Fee:
150 pounds (includes course materials, lunches and morning and
afternoon tea). Because of ESRC support, a number of bursaries are
available which reduce the fee to 50 pounds - applicants must be
full-time students, UK academic staff or ESRC-funded researchers.

Preparatory Reading:
For participants who wish to do background reading the follow
references may be useful. Please note that this reading is optional,
however participants who have little statistical background are
advised to look at some of these references.

A general introduction to sampling is given in Chapter 1 of Vic
Barnett "Elements of Sampling Theory" (Hodder and Stoughton, 1974) or
Chapter 4 of C.A. Moser and G. Kalton "Survey Methods in Social
Investigation" (2nd Edition, Heinemann, 1971).

A very readable introduction to the idea of sampling distributions is
given in Chapter 3 of Lawrence Mohr "Understanding Significance
Testing" (Sage, 1990).

Bill Williams "A Sampler on Sampling" (Wiley, 1978) gives a clear,
non-mathematical introduction to sampling.

Accommodation:
Please indicate on the registration form if you would like to be sent
details of accommodation available in Edinburgh (hotels and University
halls of residence).

Deadlines and Refunds:
Course places are limited and early completion of this form is
