Dear carolyne, One key text on cloisters of the mind, if you have not seen it already, is Hugh of Fouilloy, De claustro animae, PL 176, 1017-1182, a text compared to the Speculum Virginum by Jutta Seyfarth in her new edition of SV in Corpus Christianorum. I am curious to find out whether the theme of the cloister of the mind may have been one found in Augustinian authors, although it certainly creeps into Cistercian literature.
