I'm doing some work on European mystics, specifically their use of scenes from Christ's life - and scenes which emphasise his humanity. Related to this is a paper I'm trying to put together on the construction in the mind of a kind of ideal cloister - so far I've been considering the theme in Mechtild of Magdeburg and Gertrude of Helfta. Though a note in my Gertrude edition says that this was a common theme in c. 12 and 13 devotional writing, I haven't come across any further examples. It sounds Cistercian to me - can anyone point me to an originary text - or interesting further examples. Carolyne Larrington %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
