In a foreword of 1525 concerning the palinodic poetry, I find some references to persons who, in th O.T. and in the Acts of the Apostles, teared to pieces their garments, in sign of wrath and desolation. There is no explanation of the figure, and I wonder if it is an allusive glimpse to the seamless garment of the Christ, and the beginnings of the Reform which torned it. Do you know when this figure first occurs ? Is it a topos for every heresy, or something more specific, related whith the Schism or the Reform ? Thank you !
