I couldn't help recalling that a few months ago there were some other
scare stories in the press about pneumonia in children, some of whiom
had died. This was blamed on GPs' unwillingness to prescribe
antibiotics, and the approach of British GPs was compared unfavourably
to that of primary care physicians abroad who apparently use lots more
antibiotics than we do.
Do you ever feel that whatever you do you can't win?
Toby

... Yep, sure do.
Two weeks ago we had a 3 year old "In Vitro" infant died with meningitis due to (wait for it) ordinary old Streptococcus pneumoniae.
We also have to bettle with "Hippie" (as one strong minded and very independent mother thought she might have been mistaken for) parents who refuse to treat febrile babies and infants with bilateral conjunctivitis with oral antibiotics. Some ar gonna die, sooner or later.
The solution lies in reversing the recession in the pharmaceutical industry.
Funders cannot have it both ways.
