Many people do not realise that the principles of the 1995 EC Directive on
Data Protection have to be translated into domestic law by October 1998 --
while EC directives set results to be achieved, the form and method of their
implementation is left to individual member states.

Meanings of some parts of the Directive are open to various interpretations
but whatever happens healthcare delivery and medical practices will be
affected by new legislation and/or administrative action resulting from the
EU's requirements for protection of personal data.

An all-Europe working conference on 'Data Privacy in Medicine -- Countdown:
new legislation for the electronic information age', will take place in
Glasgow on Jan 26-28. The programme is organised by Working Group 2 of EFMI
(European Federatioin for Medical Informatics). It will be opened by the DP
Registrar, Mrs Elizabeth France, followed by speakers from seven European
countries.
