Microscopy takes about three minutes - which at my rates is probably
cheaper than the sample bottle

Cost is not the only consideration. The 'big-bang' theory of renal
scarring suggests that damage can occur within hours of infection -
before the MSU result comes back. Therefore earlier diagnosis may make a
difference (though I don't think this has been demonstrated).

Muses-

There is also a strange 'Dr Findlay-like' sense of satisfaction using a
microscope, my impression is that fewer GPs do?
