It strikes me that the key-word in the subject line is
'lurkers'.

I would approach a question from someone who posts
regularly and who I feel I 'know' with a modicom of
sympathy and would probably be quite keen to help
them out.

I would approach quite differently a question from
a lurker, whose name I didn't recognise, who I didn't
feel I knew, and whose actions were broadly similar
to someone who sticks his neck around the door at
a postgraduate meeting and says: "Hey, you guys are
all doctors. Anyone care to look at the funny spot
on my forearm?"

My solution: if you want free medical advice, hang
about, don't lurk, chip in to the discussions, make
yourself known, then ask the question, as long as it's
not anything to do with feeling tired all the time.
