The one in Word is a version of Mathtype which you can get as a stand-alone
program.

Ami-pro also has a good equation editor.

MathCad is very powerful and complex with calculation facilities as well
with 3D graphs, animations etc. RM do a student edition at about 60 pounds

We did investigate formulator and the three minute egg etc as DOS programs
years ago but the one in Word is as good as any for simply writing fractions
etc.
