Hi all,

Just a reminder that I’ve been hosting weekly online coworking sessions for
science writers and science communicators on Discord. Even though the
Discord server is getting big, the actual coworking sessions are usually
small events with 2-7 people (depending on who’s around that week).
Everyone works on their own projects but we briefly share what we’re
working on at the start of the session so that we can hold each other
accountable.

These sessions are usually a guaranteed way to get you focussed and make
sure that you stay working on one thing for a good chunk of time.

A typical two-hour session would go like this:

   - People log on to the video chat with camera and mic on.
   - In the first five to ten minutes we say hello, introduce ourselves if
anyone is new, and share what we will be working on in these two hours. It
helps to come prepared with a plan for something that can be completed in
two hours. For example “edit a short article”, “contact scientists for an
upcoming project/interview”, “find new papers to read”, “update slides” etc.
   - We then turn our mics off (but leave cameras on if possible) and work
   for about 50 minutes.
   - Then mics go back on for a short break of 5-10 minutes to update on
progress, stretch our legs, make some tea.
   - This is followed by another 45-50 minute block of quiet work.
   - At the end we share whether we finished what we set out to do, and
sometimes get opinions on ongoing work.

Sometimes people come later or leave early. That’s fine. If you pop in
during a quiet sprint please just stay muted until the break (which is
usually right in the middle of the session)

To take part, please join the SciComm coworking Discord server here

If you’re new to Discord, here’s a still up-to-date guide from Wired. But
as with most internet things, it’s easier to just jump in and try it out.
