Hi Cristina

The Royal Horticultural Society did a lovely digital volunteering project last year (funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of their Digital Skills for Heritage initiative) called Digital Dig. Volunteers worked on digitisation, transcription, geo-tagging plant nursery locations and storytelling (including filmmaking by young people, like this one on seeds which is rather nice).

All the best, Anra

Learn about the Digital Dig project and how more than 165 virtual volunteers are helping the UK to uncover and document its hidden horticultural history.

Hi Cristina,

A few years ago, Google Arts and Culture had a ‘Gardens United’ theme, featuring 50 UK parks and gardens – there are virtual tours, soundscapes, videos, interactive articles, etc.

Best,

Helen

Hi Cristina,

Take a look at the meSch project at the University of Sheffield (https://www.mesch-project.eu/). The project has a full toolkit for using physical objects to provide interactions with a computer (Tangible User Interfaces). Furthermore, it offer a full ecosystem for proper co-design (not only participatory design) that enables organisations to build their interactions.

There is a specific case study for ‘interactive exhibits for outdoor sites’.

http://codesign.mesch.io/case_studies/interactive-exhibits-four-outdoors-heritage-sites/index.htm

Important things to consider are the distributability and adoptability of the tools and systems, as well as the health and safety costs involved for staffing, as in the case of VR. Finally, there is already a good set of evidence of the high learnability and engagement levels from Tangible Interaction methods, that might be worth taking into account.

Dear All,

I'm working on a brief overview of the use of digital in historical parks and botanical gardens, for a lesson I’ll be delivering soon. I'm focusing my attention on examples in Italy, where I'm currently based, but would like to add some successful (or not so much) stories from the UK and other countries leading on this subject.

I'm looking at examples of innovative multimedia guides, VR, AR, podcasts and soundscapes, the use of databases and sensors to manage specimens and inform / interpret for the public, anything that is novel and involves digital really :)

Would you be so kind as to point me to such projects in your organisations?

With best wishes,

Cristina Locatelli
