Wednesday 20 March 2024, 19.00-20.00, Online. Platonov’s 1928 novel Chevengur has just appeared in a new English translation by Robert and Elizabeth Chandler. Variously considered to be a dystopian satire and a revolutionary novel on the idea of communism, the author himself has been portrayed as both an ardent opponent of Soviet socialism and a loyal Soviet revolutionary. Andrew George discusses how Platonov, his life, work and Chevengur relate to Marxism in their historical, cultural and political contexts.
