Subject: UCU joint action for 7th Feb day of action for Gaza
University and College workers in Leeds stand in solidarity with Palestine and support the
National Day of Action on Wednesday 7 February 2024. Want to do your bit to support Palestine? Meet at:
University of Leeds:
Parkinson steps at 1.00pm
Leeds Beckett University:
Outside the Leslie Silver Library at 1.00pm
Israel has been accused of ‘educide’- the deliberate targeting of universities, scientists, public intellectuals, and academics in Gaza to destroy the cultural fabric and memory of a society
and a people.
Israeli military action has killed at least 94 professors in Gaza
since the since 7 October 2023, as well as hundreds of lecturers and thousands of students. Palestinian universities have always been pioneers in shaping national identity, fostering resistance, and contributing to community development.
Israeli army footage displayed their demolition of Al-Israa University and has since
destroyed or severely damaged every single higher education institution in Gaza.
Samia Al-Botmeh, Economics professor at Birzeit University in the West Bank, has argued Israel’s targeted attacks on universities such as Al-Israa proves their deliberate strategy to
make Gaza uninhabitable.
Amid so much violence and destruction, Trade unionists in UK Universities are calling for
an immediate ceasefire. Once there is a ceasefire, we plan to work with our Palestinian colleagues to help rebuild their institutions.
See you all on
7 February at 1.00pm to stand together with the people of Palestine.
