Dear John cc radstats
Re asos and strikes
For radical people, the last 5 months as an academic in uk involved ASOS AND boycott of marking. My employer like about 26 others charged us 50% of wages starting at 100%, only negotiated down to 50% 2 weeks ago.

I sold my car and take busses or bike now.

I feel it is a hidden brutality, hundreds of us just at Manchester Univ, while the "Brand" idiot gets all the publicity by being a Brutaliser!!

Now the specific ACTION SHORT OF STRIKE called a boycott of marking ended 6 Sept. But now we are on strike again for 9 days--  it has taken a toll on energy, and ASOS still involves a no- volunteering rule. Hence...

Yours.
Wendy Olsen

Subject: URGENT - PLEASE SIGN UP NOW OR IT MAY NOT HAPPEN: Radstats Conference 2024: Radical Data for a New Radical Government

Hullo RadStatters
Response to my earlier email (below) has been extremely slim. We need one more organiser and many more who say they will come.

If you are NOT interested, will you please tell me why? Is it the wrong theme, or the wrong location, or what? York, London and Sheffield have been mentioned as possible locations. Which is best for you? PLEASE LET ME KNOW !!

PLEASE SEND YOUR COMMENTS: Radstats Conference 2024: Radical Data for a New Radical Government

PLEASE READ THIS:

For 49 years, Radstats has held an annual day-conference and weekend get-together, usually in February. By September we generally have some well-formulated, active proposals for the next year’s conference. This year, as far as I am aware, we have no such proposal for 2024.

I feel it would be a great pity if Radstats were to fall at its 50th conference fence after succeeding for our first 49 years. Therefore rather reluctantly I have come up with a proposal which I am happy to work on, although for energy and health reasons I certainly cannot develop alone.

PLEASE CAN YOU HELP?

I ask you please to look at the following and send your comments and let me know if you can commit to help in any of the following ways:

(a)    Join the Conference Organising Committee (min 2 people needed)

(b)   Present a paper (min 5 offers needed at this stage)

(c)    Attend personally, subject to date, location etc., etc. (min 15 needed).

All details are open for discussion.
It does not have to be this topic.
It does not have to be in York.
And it does not have to be on the suggested dates.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT FITS BEST FOR YOU.

Proposed location: York or London

Proposed date: A Saturday in February/March 2024 with linked social events on Friday and Sunday

Proposed title: Data Needs for a New Government

Possible subsections: Health, Education, Transport, Environment, Inequality, Sustainability, Taxation, Monetary policy, Local/devolved governments etc., etc.. Please suggest other headings.

Additional comments regarding York: We have had successful conferences in York in the past. Transport connections are good, as are contacts with local venues and supporting organisations. Support may be available from local Fabians and/or Labour Party (if wanted). York’s new Labour council should be interested. Local MP Rachael Maskell could speak, etc., etc.. But London is good too if someone will organise it. (I'll help.)

PLEASE LET ME HAVE YOUR COMMENTS ON THE ABOVE,
AND UNLESS YOU WANT THE CONFERENCE TO DIE, PLEASE VOLUNTEER!!

Thanks for reading this

JOHN BIBBY
