UCL Urban Laboratory Cities Imaginaries Lecture 2023, Thursday 1st June 6pm
'All That Breathes', film screening at Bertha Dochouse, London WC1N 1AW
followed by director Shaunak Sen in conversation with Prof Matthew Beaumont
Tickets: £5 including complimentary refreshments, booking essential

Oscar and BAFTA-nominated film director Shaunak Sen delivers UCL Urban Lab’s Cities Imaginaries lecture 2023, following a screening of his latest documentary film. All That Breathes won the Best Documentary Prize at Cannes in 2022. As legions of birds fall from New Delhi’s darkening skies, and the city smoulders with social unrest, two brothers race to save a casualty of the turbulent times: the black kite, a majestic bird of prey essential to their city's ecosystem.

Following the screening, Shaunak Sen will join the room via Zoom to give a talk and take questions from the audience. The talk will be hosted by Professor Matthew Beaumont (English Literature), Co-director of UCL Urban Laboratory, and we invite attendees to stay on for drinks and networking to continue the conversation and share ideas.

The event will take place at Bertha DocHouse, Curzon Bloomsbury, The Brunswick, London WC1N 1AW, which is fully accessible. Booking is essential and tickets are £5.00, which includes complimentary refreshments following the screening and talk.

Inaugurated in 2014, the Cities Imaginaries Lecture is an annual opportunity to hear a high-profile speaker from the world of art, film, literature or culture more broadly reflect on the relationship of their work to the city in the context of global urbanism. Previous speakers in the series have included Caleb Femi, Roger Robinson, David Olusoga, Sonjah Stanley Niaah, Urvashi Butalia, Gus Casely-Hayford, and Linton Kwesi Johnson.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday!
