Blame the railway industry for facilitating the mass transport of standardised building materials like brick, tiles, slate.
But then the railways were largely developed to solve the coal transport problem, as coal, being heavy, was expensive to transport on poor roads more than a couple of miles from the pit-head, and not everywhere had river / canal transport nearby.

But then we needed coal as the UK was running out of trees to make charcoal., and we needed the timber for naval ships (to go off and pillage, colonise, enslave somewhere new, and then fight France, Spain, Netherlands etc for it too).
But then we needed the coal / charcoal for iron smelting, to make war weapons and farm implements.
And humanity only invented war because we setlled down and began farming instead of hunter gathering.
Damn farmers, they cause so-ooo many problems......
