Hi all,

Just a quick note. Unfortunately attacks on the University sector in the UK are coming thick and fast at the moment- and the way they are being targeted definitely feels lie a concerted assault on critical social sciences/ humanities units. I'm forwarding below information about threatened job losses at the University of Brighton which are disportionately targeting the School of Humanities and Social Sciences which is renowned for strong research on issues of anti-colonialism and transnational solidarity among other things.

Please consider signing the open letter and some of the other actions suggested below.

All best wishes

Dave

On May 4th, the University of Brighton announced that it would be making 110 academics and 30 professional services staff redundant. The job cuts are across the University but the School of Humanities and Social Sciences has been particularly targeted. Within this School, the Humanities have been hardest hit.

We, and all of our colleagues in this subject area, have been named in a list of 54 academics in the School from which 21 will be made redundant. Cuts of this scale would severely deplete the concentrated provision of history, philosophy, cultural studies and literature at the University, depriving it of elements of teaching and scholarly research that are centrally important in the very definition of a university. We are fighting for our jobs and for the academic provision of which we are proud to deliver. We are particularly concerned about the impact of this on the work done in the school on anti-racism and anti-colonialism as this is specialism of many of us under threat.
