Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the launch of the first Italian Association of Africa-China Studies (“Associazione Italiana Studi Africa-Cina”, AISAC) which aims to create a space of encounter and a network in Italy to critically engage with Africa-China studies.

We would like to invite you to the first AISAC Webinar (in Italian, but future events will also be in English), which will be held on May 25th, 2023, at 5 pm (Italian time), during which we will introduce the Association and discuss some key current themes in the field of Africa-China studies.

More information available here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/lancio-aisac-tickets-618868922607

The establishment of the Association has been funded by the Chinese in Africa/Africans in China Research Network (CA/AC) as part of the Local Network Chapter Scheme.

The Association was founded by four Italian scholars with expertise in the field of Africa-China relations: Antonella Ceccagno (University of Bologna), Mariasole Pepa (University of Padova), Elisa Gambino(University of Manchester), and Costanza Franceschini (University of Milano-Bicocca).

As Italian scholars researching Africa-China relations from different disciplinary backgrounds, we felt the urgency to create a context to share and analyse international debates in Italy, where the public debate is still very limited and dedicated spaces are absent. In Italy, debates around Africa-China relations are still limited and imbued with stereotypical portrayals of both China and the African continent. Unlike other countries where Chinese engagement with African nations has long been part of the research agenda, Italian academia, and policy circles are only beginning to approach the subject, and the necessity to provide a platform for nuanced discussions is ever-relevant. Indeed, the cruciality of Africa-China relations to discussions around the evolving global order and the re-making of extant geographies of power is increasingly at the center of debates.

AISAC aims to provide a space for discussion amongst those interested in questions related to Africa-China entanglements. The Association is a space for interactive dialogue amongst Italy-based experts and non-experts alike to enhance and promote knowledge in the field of Africa-China studies.

Best,
Antonella, Mariasole, Elisa, Costanza
