Call for Papers for Workshop: ‘Everyday Power and Governance in Jordan’

The GLiTCH project is pleased to announce the call for applications for a two-day workshop to be held in-person in Leeds on the 7th and 8th of September 2023.
The workshop will bring together approximately 10 scholars to present and discuss their work, fine-tune their research, and strengthen collaboration between academics working on related areas of interest. The workshop will be a constructive environment for
scholars to present work in progress and get feedback on their writing and ideas from peers. Selected applicants will be requested to submit a draft of their paper in advance of the workshop, to facilitate a more engaged, in-depth critical debate.
Overview
Research into Jordan has increased in recent years, and this workshop seeks to take advantage of this intellectual momentum and forge new connections and comparisons in social science studies of the country. Academic work has increasingly appreciated the importance
and complexity of different governance practices in the country and broader Levant region, and has increasingly coupled this theoretical turn with in-depth, qualitative research. However, the actual workings and experience of everyday governance, bureaucratic
administration, and parallel informal power structures remain under-researched.
This workshop takes the agglomerations of power and authority that can be observed in Jordan as a starting point to explore theoretical broader questions and conceptual approaches. This workshop aims to bring interdisciplinary approaches to the study of amalgamations
of power in the country and showcase much-needed qualitative research.

Please note, participants are invited to take these categories as inspiration, not strict guidelines.
Papers are foreseen as being predominantly qualitative, but other forms of data are welcome. We are particularly interested in work which makes use of innovative research methodologies. Research at all stages of development is welcome, as this workshop will
be a friendly, constructive discussion amongst scholars of Jordan and the broader Levant region.
Participants will have 20 – 30 minutes to present their paper, and this will be followed by questions and a group discussion. This workshop is committed to building a shared conversation, and so time will be made for more in-depth debates. The workshop will
also feature a special session focussing on qualitative research methodologies.
Eligibility Criteria
This call is open to all scholars working on issues of power and governance in Jordan. Eligible candidates should ideally be at least in the final year of their PhD, but exceptions will be taken into consideration.
Scholars from the region are particularly encouraged to attend, and presentations may be made in
Arabic or in English.
This workshop is aimed at researchers who have completed or are currently undertaking qualitative research, and are looking to present their work in progress to academic peers to develop and fine-tune their ideas.
Funds for travel, accommodation, and subsistence are available. We have a strong preference for in-person presentations, but there is the possibility for hybrid presentations where travel and visa issues present obstacles.
Submission Guidelines and Dates
Applicants should send an abstract of 300 – 500 words to

August 2023.
