The family of Nathan Walworth, who funded the building of Ringley Church in 1625, held land at Ringley in 1420: https://www.bolton.org.uk/walwrkft.jpg. It looks as if Ringley Fold Farm (now Ringley Fold House) was the nucleus of the C17 settlement.

Ringley, on the Irwell about halfway between Manchester and Bolton (SD763053), is not mentioned in any of DEPN, CDEPN, Ekwall PNs of Lancashire, and Mills PNs of Lancashire.  At https://archivecat.lancashire.gov.uk/, I can find records of the place only from 1622 onwards.

Does anyone have more information about the origin of the name?   It is an important site in the industrial history of the area.

Keith
