Hello all

I'm forwarding this email in case of interest here too. BIG (known now
as BIG but was originally the British Interactives Group) has a science
communication / public engagement conference at Thinktank in Birmingham
in July /(Wed 26th - Fri 28th)/ with a *deadline* for session proposals
*this Friday* *3 Feb*.

Proposed sessions in the draft programme
<http://bigevent.info/all-session-proposals/> that may pique interest
here include

*Game Workshop*
A 'tabletop group discussion game' - not in itself particularly
computing-y but has been used by UCL WEISS to talk about data ethics and
could be adapted for other topics.

*Puzzles in Maths (and wider STEM) communication*
- people like solving puzzles and they can be a hook for people to
engage with STEM content. Discussion about benefits and pitfalls.

*Making science engaging to people with learning and physical disabilities*
- for example, more tactile things

*Instagram: Experimenting online*
- other social media platforms are available :)

*What does the UKRI Public Engagement strategy mean for you?*
- "UKRI have recently issued their first Public Engagement strategy
<https://www.ukri.org/what-we-offer/public-engagement/our-strategy/>. it
outlines 3 main goals for PE work which emphasise, 'shared endeavour’
‘collaboration’ and 'long term engagement' with innovators and publics.
What does this mean to engagement practitioners? Does the work you do
already fall under this strategy, do you need to reframe your work or
start again with new aims? How does this translate in our work with
researchers? We plan an interactive session exploring the meaning of the
new strategy and seeing how current and future activity by BIG members
can help towards the UKRI’s 3 goals. We will hear from UKRI on their
aims, how engagement might be assessed and supported, and explore the
‘culture change’ they hope to realise with the new strategy."

The BIG Event will be in Birmingham at Thinktank from 26-28 July, 2023.
But the programme needs YOU!

The BIG Event conference is made up of sessions delivered by people like
you. Yes, you. And there will be no programme unless you stop
procrastinating and propose sessions. The deadline to propose sessions
is Friday, 3rd February.

How to propose a session:
Login to the proposal site: http://bigevent.info/

Add a session proposal: http://bigevent.info/wp-admin/post-new.php
and
Make sure to *Publish* your proposal so others can see it too.

View other proposals by viewing the Draft Programme
http://bigevent.info/all-session-proposals/
and
If you can contribute to another person’s session, get in touch with
them. The Session Leader’s email should be visible to you.

Delivering a session at the BIG Event is a great for lots of reasons
including, but not limited to: 1) you get to give back to the community
2) you get a discounted ticket to the BIG Event 3) you get to
collaborate with others 4) it’s a chance to get feedback from your peers
on projects past and future 5) the best way to really understand
something is to teach it!

The deadline to propose sessions is Friday, 3rd February.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have questions. The BIG Executive
Committee and the Event Coordinator are here to help.

Happy proposing!
The BIG Exec
