The Common Notion. Science and Consensus in the Seventeenth Century, abbreviated NOTCOM, is a five-year project dedicated to seventeenth-century natural philosophy funded by an ERC Advanced Grant (no. 101052433) in 2023-2027. The project studies epistemologies and methods of collective science and public dissemination strategies in early modern science, with special focus on the role of so-called “common notions.” The project is conducted within the general framework of INSHS, the humanities and social sciences wing of the CNRS. It is shared between the Institut d’histoire des représentations et des idées dans les modernités (IHRIM) at ENS de Lyon, and the Maison Française d’Oxford (MFO). It involves important collaboration with the Centre for Intellectual History, the Centre for the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology, and other research centres in Oxford. It includes a team of post-graduate and post-doctoral researchers, recruited in France and in the United Kingdom, and contributes to the organisation of a number of lectures, workshops, and conferences in Oxford, Lyon, and elsewhere. The position as project manager is on a French contract with the CNRS but must be held by a current resident in the UK. It offers one-year contracts, renewable up to four years on condition of successful collaboration. The position is full time (35 hours per week) with an office space at the MFO. The offer is open to non-academics with managerial experience but also to currently unfunded doctoral or early career scholars with an interest in early modern philosophy, science, and/or intellectual cuIture who have the ability to work in both English and French. There is some flexibility in terms of work tasks for candidates who wish to also pursue research falling within the remit of the project. It offers a platform for a future career in research, including network and excellent experience with French, English, and European funding structures.

Job description

The European Project Manager (EPM) will be associated with the research project “The Common Notion. Science and Consensus in the Seventeenth Century” (NOTCOM). NOTCOM is a European project of the Horizon Europe framework programme that explores the historical background to the current notion of “scientific consensus” through a study of the theories, methods, and practices of collective science in early-modern natural philosophy. It is administratively split between two units of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS): The Maison Française d’Oxford (MFO) and the research centre IHRIM at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon. The European Project Manager (EPM) will work alongside the principal investigator, Dr Mogens Lærke, and the project team, and will assist in coordination, organisation of seminars, administrative and technical follow-up of the project, and in communication actions. The EPM will be employed by the CNRS on a French renewable fixed-term contract and posted at the Maison Française d’Oxford (2-10 Norham Road, Oxford OX2 6SE). Please note that the EPM must be a current resident in the UK with permission to work and have the ability to work effectively in both English and French.

NOTCOM est un projet européen du programme cadre Horizon Europe qui a pour but d’explorer le contexte historique de la notion actuelle de "consensus scientifique" par une investigation des théories, des méthodes et des pratiques de la science collective dans la philosophie naturelle du XVII^e siècle. Il est administrativement partagé entre deux unités CNRS : IHRIM (UMR 5317) à l’Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon et la Maison Française d’Oxford (MFO UMIFRE 11, Oxford). Le projet dure 5 ans. Le manager de projet européen (European Project Manager – EPM) travaille aux côtés du coordinateur scientifique, Dr. Mogens Lærke, et de l’équipe en charge du projet et l’assistera dans les tâches de coordination, d’organisation des séminaires, de suivi administratif et technique du projet et dans les actions de communication. L’EPM sera employé par le CNRS sur un contrat français et affecté à la Maison Française d’Oxford (2-10 Norham Road, Oxford OX2 6SE).
