The closest to the word in any form of still current English may well be:

BLATE [Blait, Bleat, Bleet]

According to the Dictionary of the Scots Language = modest, diffident, bashful, sheepish [!]; put out, embarrassed

It might do nicely in an 18th-century context. If ever I get round to translating Hölderlin's ode 'Blödigkeit', I'd quite like to use 'Blateness' as a title.
