As part of Edinburgh Napier University’s research and teaching success,
we are looking for new Lecturers in Social Sciences to join our
expanding team in the School of Applied Sciences.
We require specific research & teaching expertise in Critical Social
Policy (i.e. intersectional feminist, trans*, critical race/whiteness,
migration, (in)equality, disability, queer, post-colonial, decolonial,
approaches and studies). We invite applications from colleagues in
interdisciplinary social sciences and humanities, incl. sociology, human
geography, anthropology, cultural studies, psychosocial studies, area
studies, politics, among others. We are particularly looking for people
who can bring embodied experiences of critical practice, standpoints and
epistemologies, to help us diversify our team.

You will be supporting our new MSc Applied Social Research. This is an
innovative programme cultivating a critical awareness of the economic,
socio-cultural and political contexts that influence the practice of
social research in various fields (i.e. academic, non-governmental,
business, government & policy, media & creative industries). Together,
we will be building on Edinburgh Napier University’s phenomenal results
from the Research Excellence Framework (2021), which are a testament to
our growing strength and capability as a research institution. These
results demonstrate the increasing impact of Edinburgh Napier's
commitment to quality, and collective work that is at the heart of the
Social Sciences.
*The Role*
As a Lecturer in Social Sciences (Critical Social Policy), you will join
our vibrant subject group, comprising Social Sciences, Criminology and
Policing. You will make a significant contribution to Social Sciences.

You will be responsible for developing, designing, and delivering
teaching and student-centred learning underpinned by academic
scholarship and professional practice within your assigned areas of
responsibility. You will contribute to our Social Sciences research,
which is committed to advancing more socially just and equitable
societies. You will help us to build on our outstanding REF outcomes
(UoA 20), where 81% of our research outputs were rated 3* or 4* (sector
average of 75%), as were all of our Impact Case Studies (the best
Scottish university by this ICS measurement). The University’s overall
REF 2021assessment was that 68% of our research was either
“world-leading” or “internationally excellent”, up 15% since 2014.
Additionally, the University’s research power metric rocketed from 250
to 718, making Edinburgh Napier the top ranking Scottish modern
university for both research power and research impact.
*What we are looking for*
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a contribution to teaching and
research through the ability to:
* Develop teaching, learning, and supervision strategies appropriate
for postgraduate and undergraduate levels;
* Engage with students from diverse backgrounds, nurture curiosity, and
* Support their personal and professional development;
* Bring the ethos of research into pedagogical practice;
* Utilise creative approaches in the curriculum, including
assessments, study skills, reflective practice;
* Inspire students with values we share, rooted in intersectional
feminist, non-occidentalist, social justice approaches;
* Contribute to the further development of the new MSc programme;
* Develop or consolidate your research portfolio, as appropriate to
your career stage;
* Contribute to the Social Sciences research strengths in: migrations,
trans-national geographies; genders and sexualities, intimacies;
(in)equalities; minorities, marginalisation, and social justice;
organisations, collectives and social movements; and the critical
epistemologies on which they are founded;
* Pursue your own research topics, interests, and areas of enquiry
that further grow our research portfolio;
* Build collaborations with colleagues across the social sciences
team, the university, and internationally for the benefit of
research and teaching;
* Build relations and exchanges with stakeholders to ensure our MSc
Applied Social Research programme remains embedded in the
professional research sector;
* Some national/international travel may be required, and the ability
to teach quantitative methods will be an asset, but is not prerequisite.

Salary: Grade 6, £40,927 - £50,296 per annum
