2022 RSA Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) Programme

Bridging Old and New Divides: Global Dynamics, Regional transformations

Dear List members,

Throughout 2022, the RSA in partnership with Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL), Research Centre Global Dynamics at Leipzig University and Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities is organising a themed series of events focussing on Central and Eastern Europe:

These events will highlight and discuss bridging old and new divides in CEE, provide knowledge exchange, capacity building and networking opportunities with researchers and policymakers working in the field.

Early Career online event

3rd May 2022, free to attend, application required

Call for Abstracts Early Career online event

Regional development is often treated as being based on a clear and consensual perspective on the kind of progress needed. But academic as well as political debates are far less univocal. Regional studies in the past three decades have articulated a range of new and old social, spatial, economic and political divides, especially between urban centres and peripheralised non-metropolitan areas that stem from the dominant regional development approaches in CEE and beyond.

Early career researchers might have particular views on these divides and associated ‘crises’ as many of them influence their future considerably. This is not only true for climate change and the current COVID-19 pandemic but also for the multiple crises which capitalism has faced during the last years, the changing economic balances which are implied by the rise of China and the rise of populist politics especially after the so-called ‘migrant crisis’. At the same time early career researchers might experiment with novel research approaches, incl. new visual tools, the use of social media or action research approaches.

The early career event aims to kick-start the discussion on the four thematic streams of the conference and to form a network by bringing together early career researchers and the conference’s scientific board.

The thematic streams are:

·         (Alternative) economies,

·         EU and regional policies,

·         Political geographies and re-thinking CEE, and

·         Societies and culture.

Participants are expected to present their research projects which are connected to at least one of the above-mentioned topics both in a pitch-like style in a plenary session and in more detail in small discussion groups. Each of the four separate discussion groups will involve 4 Early Career Researchers and 2-3 Senior Researchers to allow for intense discussions.
