Dear All,
See attached PDF for those interested in a discussion on kinds of wood for wood engraving, if not already known to you.
P.L. Simmonds, ‘The hard woods used in turnery and wood engraving’, in The Art Journal illustrated catalogue of the International Exhibition, 1862, London; New York: J.S. Virtue, [1863], pp. 262–278.§ Published in 1863 according to a reference by the editors to this edition of the Journal on p. iii: “during ... 1863”.
Boxwood was preferred for wood engraving, but due to its shortage in 1862 alternative kinds of wood were considered. The PDF only shows the titlepage of the Journal and the cropped parts of pp. 262–269 relevant to the subject. The rest of the pages is filled with (wood engraved) illustrations of objects in the exhibition with their captions.
Please enjoy,
Ad.
