10 years of LGBTQ+ outreach and archives development at Surrey History Centre

From Edward Carpenter to Guildford Area Gay Society, Surrey has an important LGBTQ+ past which Surrey History Centre in Woking has been raising awareness of since 2009. Di Stiff is the Collections Development Archivist at the Centre where she has driven the Centre’s development of its LGBTQ+ archive collections and its engagement work with local community and support organisations. Di will share some of the LGBTQ+ outreach work that the Centre has undertaken over the years and she’ll reveal more about how developing the collections has been key to revealing Surrey’s little-known but rich queer history.

Di has been an archivist for 30 years, the last 23 of them spent at Surrey History Centre. She is passionate about bringing the histories of all Surrey’s diverse communities to a wider audience and to this end has worked with Polish, Muslim, Gypsy, Roma Traveller and refugee groups. Di is also an Ally representative in Surrey County Council’s LGBTQ+ Staff Network.

Outloud LGBTQ+ Salon is regular monthly meeting to explore lesbian, gay, trans, bisexual and queer histories.
