Dear Friends

Yes, it's a very worrying report.  I agree with George that it requires a co-ordinated response from the TC family.  I remember a similar incident in Serbia (where a resident was actually killed).  EFTC organised a press release on that incident and also wrote to the Serbian health minister and to the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church (as with this report the "therapeutic community" was a religious agency).  I probably have those letters on file - they might be a good starting point.

I have forwarded the report to Ed Carlson (currently TCA president, I think) and Lonnie Grainger (editor of the WFTC newsletter) and suggested that those organisations should respond.  EFTC has a board meeting soon and I will ensure it is discussed and acted upon there.  I will also forward it to Vanessa Dumbrell (the new lead officer for ATCA).

These are tough times for the TC family in all sorts of ways.  Best wishes all - lets stay safe and keep the faith!

Rowdy and Rod;

Thank you both for the alert. I would add a response list should include EFTC, TCA  WFTC, FLACT and all other regional associations.

George

 I read the article, looked for an e-mail address for the authors but found none.

But for sure someone should contact the authors and make sure that they know these are NOT therapeutic communities.

Good Morning Family

A worrying report here about "therapeutic communities" in Brazil.  I very much hope that WFTC and FLACT is in a position to respond to this article.  Let's be absolutely clear.  Coercion/involuntary treatment and physical punishment have no place whatsoever in the therapeutic community.  (Nor, for me, has religion - but I recognise that is not a universal view and I remember that in Genoa this issue caused a great deal of division and confrontation).

That said, we should be aware that one of the great threats we face in the TC movement is the increasing number of organisations (many with completely unacceptable practices) which claim to be "therapeutic communities" but are clearly no such thing.  Inevitably, these rogue organisations 'poison the well' and undermine the good reputation of the real TC movement.

Read the Aljazeera article here:

Bolsonaro is destroying mental health care to favour evangelicals. His assault on public mental health services will hurt Black Brazilians the most and benefit evangelical centres.
