Thanks Paula – I guess Clarivate have fixed the issue where accounts created in this way were not seen as being attached to the institution. It was broken, not wrong. Which also means that the answer given by support about how they should work (IP range/VPN only) was wrong… as we suspected. I went into WoS via our institutional login, and then logged in with an account I created last week that wasn’t seen as being an institutional-attached login then. I then used the EndNote link on WoS and hey presto, it transferred to EndNote Online, already logged-in, and now says I have 366 days of roaming. So it seems to successfully upgrade accounts and map them to your institution, too. I think! Certainly two sites have confirmed to me that things are working fine for them. I asked one to actually video the process. They created the new WoS account off-campus and outside the VPN, by going to their normal off-campus authentication via their library website. Once authenticate they were put into the new WoS sign in page, at which they registered for a new account. Once this was created and they have signed into it, they went to the “Products” menu in WoS and selected EndNote. At this point there was a delay, before the T&C acceptance screen appeared. Once that was agreed to, their new EndNote online account was displayed, with their site styles and 366 days of roaming. I wonder how this relates to the steps taken by the sites seeing the issue? When I spoke to our support team yesterday, they have apparently asked a couple of sites for guest credentials, so they can test out the process. I have no news on where they are with that. So I suggest that those who are having issues, get onto our support team and get them to watch you go through the process of creating a new WoS account and linking it to an EndNote online account, so they can see exactly what is going on. This must be very frustrating, especially at this time of year, with the new intake on you or imminent ☹. The other day, I went to Web of Science (off campus) and created a Web of Science account. I then logged into EndNote Online with those credentials BUT only got access to a Basic account, not a roaming one associated with our institution (I.e., with our filters, styles etc.) So the long-recommended route to get institutional access via WoS that James alluded to certainly didn’t work for me, either. That way if they leave the University they will still have access to their account – it will just revert back to a basic account. Otherwise, they would need to contact tech support to get it changed. As long as they authenticate using their University credentials during the process the actual email used to create the account doesn’t need to be an institutional address. I hope I’m right in saying this? Upon checking with our Internal Team, we realized that there is no issue with the roaming status and the connection with EndNote Online with Web of Science from your end. However, to answer your doubt, the Web of Science works only if it is associated with any institution. Roaming access is applied when a user is associated with an Institution. The Roaming value in the EndNote Online subscription information only has 2 ways to display as below: 1) The number of days left 2) Roaming access has expired Meanwhile, the VPN would need to specifically be set to use an IP Address that falls within the recognized range for your institution or for their subscription to Web of Science. Since, those users are using what should be a valid Institutional IP Address to get into the Web of Science, which should be acknowledged when they check their EndNote Online subscription information. Those users are institutional and, generally have access to the Web of Science since they are creating their EndNote Online accounts through it (or, trying to). If they're not attached to the University, they would not be getting access to the Web of Science, neither EndNote nor EndNote Online is packaged with any kind of entitlement to Web of Science (that includes any version of either product). It should also be noted that some institutions enable OpenURL service for EndNote Web. This functionality would also be lost without an affiliation with an institution, which is also lost when roaming expires. Hence: - Without an institution, the user is not going to have Roaming access. - Without an institution's VPN, the user is not at all likely to have access to Web of Science (which is not free or included with EndNote or EndNote Online in any way). Has anyone managed to do this successfully via the new Web of Science? Is there anything that we need to do at our end to make it work? Or are they really not enabling roaming access to students signed in via our institution to the Web of Science? If students are not able to sign up for the full version of EndNote Online it is likely that they are going to move to other referencing management tools. Any advice would be appreciated. I’ve helped a number of students this year who have not been able to access our custom styles and import options because their roaming access has expired. As they have been off-campus, and we don’t give taught students VPN access, the only way to resolve this has been to direct them to Web of Science. There needs to be some mechanism of relinking accounts to institutional permissions which doesn’t reply on IP addresses. Why can’t this be reinstated in the new Web of Science via the Shibboleth login (as in the previous version)? Logging in to the EndNote online through Web of Science will not activate the roaming access for EndNote online account. So basically they're saying that unless our students access EndNote through the VPN, they cannot use the full version of EndNote unless they sign in on campus? Is that right? I'm assuming the same would apply to students at all institutions. This doesn't seem very satisfactory in the times of increased online learning. Hi Paula I have just tried going into the new Web of Science, outside my company IP range, signing in with an account that did not have an EndNote account, then clicking on “EndNote” in the “Products” menu, I was asked to agree to the EndNote Terms and Conditions, before being put in my new EndNote account. So that workflow seems work fine from here. I would suggest you get our support team to investigate this directly with the user to get to the bottom of it. We have always recommended students to sign up to EndNote through Web of Science, to ensure that they get roaming access to the full version on EndNote online. However, the new WoS interface doesn't allow for this. A colleague has tried signing up for a WoS account using her personal email and then tried accessing EndNote, but didn't get the roaming access. I'm aware that the Classic version is still available at the moment, but I'm keen to know what I should be telling students going forwards about getting roaming access to EndNote if they're going to be using it off campus.
