The department of Theatre and Performance Studies at the National University of Singapore welcomes applicants for its MA by Research and PhD programmes.

Our department is reputed for its cutting-edge and quality scholarship in theatre and performance concerned with the aesthetic expressions, cultural dynamics and social forces of a diverse and fast-changing contemporary Asia. As a reference point within wider international contexts, our core inquiry into Asian modernity and inter-Asian cross-cultural currents provides an intellectual resource for critical and comparative research in such fields as (post)colonialism, postmodernism, transnationalism and globalisation. Reflecting the research interests and professional experience of its faculty in the theatre and performance of Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia and the Asia-Pacific, the programme specialises in practice approaches, pedagogy, theory, criticism and dramaturgy, with particular focuses on cultural performance, digital archiving, intermediality and adaptation, community engagement, popular entertainment, Asian cinema, and Shakespeare in Asia. The programme also has strong interests in breaking new ground in innovative research methodologies founded in the intersections of theory and practice. We welcome prospective students interested in including components of practice as research in their research processes.

Students begin work with a dedicated supervisor on their projects during the first year. Coursework can be complemented by teaching and research assistantships, where available. In addition, participation in reading groups, departmental seminars and the activities of faculty-level research clusters is encouraged. Attendance at international conferences provides excellent exposure to the wider research community, and some funds for this and for field work are available.

Applications for the August 2022 intake are due by 1 November 2021 and may be submitted online: https://inetapps.nus.edu.sg/GDA2/Home.aspx.
