This course is open to beginners... as well as those with some performing or workshop experience.

Get in touch with your own gloriously flawed humanity by discovering and playing these vibrant, enduring characters:

the irrepressible and joyous Arlecchino (Harlequin), the incorrigible Pulcinella (ancestor of Punch from Punch & Judy), the crotchety Pantalone, the flamboyant, cowardly Capitano, the pedantic charlatan - Il Dottore, the hapless Zanni, the well-dodgy Brighella, the unpredictable Witch and Colombina, the clever servant.

Barefaced is a fun way to say that we discover and play the characters' physicality, voice and improvised play without the traditional Commedia half-masks - but with all their cheeky audacity!

Commedia Dell'Arte was a tremendously successful theatre form which spread its influences from Italy to France and England, informing characters in plays by Goldoni, Moliere, Shakespeare and more.

On the course: have fun as you grow confidence, ignite imagination, open up playing range and extend physical and vocal expression with physical and vocal warm-ups, play tasks plus a process of imaginative immersion (‘stepping-in' enables a heightened state of release similar to mask work).

You'll be guided into the rhythms, obsessions and perspectives of each of the characters so you can Improvise with physicality, text or Gramelot (nonsense language) and explore some character interaction.
