Edward Bond has posted a major series of updates to his online website (see link below). SCUDD members and colleagues who may have lost touch with his work are encouraged to delve into these and earlier entries. Bond has never settled for a quiet retirement in the face of the crises we find ourselves dealing with. He is concluding the writing of a trilogy of plays begun with Dea (published by Methuen) that are drama-poetic responses to the worlds of Trump, Johnson, Climate Crisis and Covid.
His Drama Theory also takes up these themes. He sets out on a rich and challenging journey from the history and roots of Drama through its transformations under the social and political changes of all the intervening eras since the Greek theatre.
In his latest posting, entitled Operating Notes for the Human Imagination, he continues his blending of historical analysis with a dramatic poet’s allusive meditation, in a passionate and politically engaged personal voice. These Notes are the product of a period of intense hard work, and probably require a matching hard work to fully digest. But your students will find many sharp insights along the way that will give them access to the richness and depth on offer. Above all Bond is here engaged in trying to make Drama work for all our futures as drama workers, drama teachers and citizens.
