British Museum Knowledge Share Events - Spring 2021

 

The British Museum National Programmes team are pleased to announce a series of free online events in Spring 2021. Designed for people working in the museum and cultural heritage sector, these events will build on some of the conversations that were held at the National Programmes Conference 2019, which explored equality and diversity in UK museum practice. Each session will be different but the linking thread is the theme of change, as we look ahead to the changes we might want to see in the sector, and reflect on a year of profound and tumultuous change for everyone. Full details of each event will be released in the coming weeks via the National Programmes Conference website.

 

The first three events are now open for booking:

 

• Psychological First Aid – supporting people in mental or emotional distress – a live webinar with Q&A on Tuesday 16 March 2021 16:00 GMT. Psychological First Aid (PFA) has particular relevance for museum and cultural heritage colleagues, especially those working directly with members of the public or vulnerable groups. Led by Chartered Psychologist Dr Richard Castle, this event will introduce PFA and the framework and basic tools we can all use to support ourselves and each other. • Going Virtual: Moving outreach work online during the COVID-19 pandemic – a live webinar with Q&A on Tuesday 23 March 2021 16:00 GMT. Led by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), this webinar with Q&A will explore how the team delivered six outreach programmes virtually during lockdown, as part of a wider project called Making the Future. Benefitting over 120 participants aged 7-70s, these programmes have ranged from filmmaking and archiving to comic book-making and photo embroidery, and have produced outstanding creative outputs. Join the PRONI team as they showcase some of the work produced and talk about the process of moving their work online. They will also discuss the issues raised in relation to preservation, creativity and access – as well as the strengths and limitations of going virtual. • Colonial Countryside: Heritage Research and ‘Cancel Culture’ – a live webinar with Q&A on Tuesday 30 March 2021 16:00 GMT. Historian Dr. Yewande Okuleye will talk to Professor Corinne Fowler about Colonial Countryside, a child-led history and writing project guided by a team of historians. The project explored connections between ten National Trust houses, the East India Company and transatlantic slavery. Join Corinne and Yewande as they discuss this work, the National Trust's 2020 report on its houses’ colonial links, and the reception they received.
