The last week has thrown a spotlight on the serious issue of police violence and harassment, and the shutting down of non-violent protest.
Following the murder of Sarah Everard in which the chief suspect is a serving police officer, peaceful, socially distanced vigils to remember Sarah have been made unsafe by police forces intervening to stop them taking place. In Clapham Common, women were jostled,
forced to the ground, handcuffed and detained before being arrested.
This took place exactly one year since Breonna Taylor, a black paramedic, was shot and killed by Louisville police in her own home, a crime for which no charges were brought.
The last year has also seen a major upsurge of police harassment of young black people through stop and search, particularly under Section 60. During the first lockdown, The Metropolitian Police stopped 20,000 young black men in London during the coronavirus
lockdown – the equivalent more than a quarter of all black 15- to 24-year-olds in the capital. Black people are 18 times more likely to be stopped and searched under Section 60.
Now the Government is pushing through legislation that trashes the right to protest, with a bill that will
“strengthen
police powers to tackle non-violent protests" if they are deemed to be 'noisy' or cause 'annoyance'. It is absolutely crucial that this legislation is defeated.

us this Saturday at 5PM when these vital issues, and how we fight them, will be discussed by leading anti-racists from Britain and across the world.
