Unsure how you would prevent these sponges establishing in the first place; this has been an ongoing problem for commercial ships and hard biofouling of sea chests/piping ect.
In addition to other suggestions here, and depending on the pipe diameter/length/access openings, a plumber's "electric eel" might be effective in physically stripping sponges from pipes...these machines do a great job removing invasive roots from domestic sewer pipes.

There are some fish farms in the Eastern Colombian plains whose piping gets infested with a freshwater sponge that clogs the circulation system. They have tried with copper sulfate, a classical disease preventer for aquarium fish, but to no avail. So far the only thing that works is manual scrubbing, but it is cumbersome and time consuming.
Any suggestions as to how to prevent this?; and once infested, how to remove it?
