Interesting post Sven.
Unsure how you would prevent these sponges establishing in the first place; this has been an ongoing problem for commercial ships and hard biofouling of sea chests/piping ect.
In addition to other suggestions here, and depending on the pipe diameter/length/access openings, a plumber's "electric eel" might be effective in physically stripping sponges from pipes...these machines do a great job removing invasive roots from domestic sewer pipes.

They have tried with copper sulfate, a classical disease preventer for aquarium fish, but to no avail. So far the only thing that works is manual scrubbing, but it is cumbersome and time consuming.
