Hi all,

I completely appreciate your comments and although I can't speak for Mohamed Osman, I agree that too often people from a BAME background/marginalised groups are asked to contribute to these groups without remuneration. All of our Council and committee roles are unpaid which is generally standard practice across the sector (which I'm not saying I necessarily agree with).

There was a report from HEPI in 2019 exploring whether University governors should be paid. I think this should be explored again, especially in light of the drive for HE to improve the diversity on their boards: https://www.hepi.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/HEPI-Payment-for-university-governors-A-discussion-paper-Report-118-11_07_19.pdf

Have a good weekend all!

Best wishes,

Nico

Hi Jason;

               Many thanks for bringing this up. Far too often BAME professionals are seen as "valuable contributors" to EDI related initiatives but are overlooked for actual paid roles. The well paid roles go to the White professionals but BAME people are expected to accept volunteer and low-paying "gimp" roles and work their hearts out with no recognition in the hope that one day they will be deemed worthy of a paid role. Far too often BAME individuals are forced to choose between performing advocative/EDI related roles that they like and having a role that enables them to (literally) put food on the table for themselves and their families. BAME expertise is valued, but not enough to get paid for it like our White counterparts. A good example of perpetuated structural racism (in my opinion). [Friday afternoon rant over. Apologies]

Thank You...

Dear Nico and everybody,

I hesitate to promote this as it's explicitly an unpaid role, with expenses-only (not, presumably, including the fractional costs of working from home for now).

For people in permanent academic roles, this is potentially a useful thing to have on your cv for promotion (ie eventual remuneration - if their institution values such work) but quite a number of people who would have excellent expertise are on some form of precarious contract.

I would be willing to promote it if there was a clearer rationale about this arrangement that I felt protected against exploitation. Do you or the contact mentioned (Mohamed Osman) have anything to add in this respect?

Best wishes,
Jason Davies (UCL)

Dear HERAG members,

In 2020, in response to calls from staff and students for an independent Council Committee to oversee reforms that root out institutional racism and structures that perpetuate inequities, LSHTM's Council created a new committee of Council for Diversity and Inclusion.

The purpose of the new committee is to oversee an independent external review and hold SLT to account for ensuring that LSHTM has an integrated and proactive approach to equality, diversity and inclusion, both in meeting its public sector equality duties and in addressing diversity and inclusion issues. Members of this committee should provide external insight and expertise on institutional reforms, discrimination, anti-racism and decolonisation.

To assist the committee in this work, LSHTM is now seeking applications for the role of Co-opted member. Co-opted members are independent, external, members who bring specific expertise to committees.
