Dear Liz and Colleagues,

Thank you all for sharing what you are doing at your institutions.

At Canterbury Christ we launched an Allyship programme last October. The programme includes workshops that are open to staff and students across the institution. As part of this we have also launched a campaign in which students and staff can take a pledge to be an ally and stand up against racism. Alongside this is our IMATTER campaign in support of Black Lives Matter and with the aim of raising Black voices.
We are currently developing a toolkit with practical resources to support staff and students to become impactful allies and working with our external partners (e.g. student placement providers) to help them become more race-conscious. More information can be found on the below pages:

  * Stand up against racism and Allyship page: https://www.canterbury.ac.uk/black-history-365/make-a-stand-against-racism

  *   Pledge page: https://www.canterbury.ac.uk/black-history-365/pledge-to-be-an-ally

  *   IMATTER page: https://www.canterbury.ac.uk/black-history-365/imatter

  * Following the workshops some of our students decided that they wanted to write a blog on their reflections/takeaway: https://blogs.canterbury.ac.uk/studentnews/allyship-workshop-reflections-and-key-learnings/

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks

Mary

Hi Liz,

At University of Edinburgh we have an Allyship webpage which also contains learning resources, https://www.ed.ac.uk/equality-diversity/inclusion/race/stand-against-racism<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ed.ac.uk%2Fequality-diversity%2Finclusion%2Frace%2Fstand-against-racism&data=04%7C01%7Cmary.makinde%40canterbury.ac.uk%7Ceed313870f9d43d0a29208d8d1938820%7C0320b2da22dd4dab8c216e644ba14f13%7C0%7C0%7C637489778867134423%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=DdZnEJw6u%2BKxdWo4qzsUUpT7DJg81u0uixH8T1%2BUzjM%3D&reserved=0>

Would be really interested in knowing more about your race-conscious workshops if you were willing to share resources?

Best,

Caroline

Subject: Allyship workshops and projects

Dear HERAG Members,

I hope you are all keeping safe and well.

Please could I ask whether anyone has been involved in developing allyship workshops or projects within your institution? I'm aware this is a topic high on agendas at present, including our own.

At St George's we have recently launched a series of race-conscious workshops for leaders and managers which focus on talking about race effectively to promote mutual understanding and foster positive work relationships. We're now looking at "what happens next" and would like to develop a set of allyship workshops to follow on from these initial workshops, which support and empower staff to move from "talking" to becoming true allies.

Any insights or information you'd be willing to share would be incredibly helpful.

Many thanks,

Liz
