Good afternoon HERAG colleagues,

Happy Race Equality Week. It’s nearly the weekend!

I’m Afua and I work as the Diversity Governance Coordinator at Nottingham Trent University. In my role, I support the Vice-Chancellor and University Executive Team in progressing our Race Equality Action Plan.<https://www.ntu.ac.uk/myhub/newsroom/2020/12/vice-chancellor-launches-the-race-equality-action-plan>

One of my main projects is an end-to-end review of the complaint procedures and processes at the institution. This review is in relation to students, with all complaints that relate to alleged discrimination and harassment relating to the personal characteristics of the complainant.

The review will explore the barriers for students and staff in raising issues or concerns and will seek to understand what additional support they would find useful.

The review also seeks to explore:

  * The familiarity of students/staff with the existing support if they believe they have been the victim of discrimination and/or harassment.
  * Evaluate the options available for those considering making a complaint, and on initial support for students and colleagues as they raise a complaint.
  * Evaluate the range of intervention or prevention options available.

Additionally, it seeks to create a supported safe space for students to raise their complaints.

I wanted to ask if any colleagues/ institutions have conducted similar reviews/ changed practice in relation to their respective complaints procedures.

Any insight/experiences/suggestions would be very welcome, thank you!

Kind Regards,

Afua Acheampong
Diversity Governance Coordinator
