Dear all,

The University of Lincoln is hosting a machine learning and computer vision competition to devise intelligent ways to find the “best” poinsettia. They will be looking at the height of the plant, colour of the leaves, and “bushiness” among other attributes.

Further details follow if this is of interest:

The event is taking place between Monday 14th and Friday 18th December.

Taking part in this machine learning and computer vision competition, you will contribute towards building an image recognition system to help robots distinguish between healthy and unhealthy plants. Devising intelligent ways to find the ‘best’ poinsettia, looking at the height of the plant, colour of the leaves, and “bushiness” among other attributes.

You will be given access to our virtual 'poinsettia nursery', where you will find many photographs of poinsettia plants. Bridge Farm Group, the leading UK producer of ornamental plants, flowers and herbs has allowed us to visit their state of the art facility in Spalding, where they are growing over 1million poinsettias to collect the images and data required to run this event.
The opening ceremony will take place at 10:00am on Monday 14th December 2020, this will kick off your challenge.
Models should be submitted by 9:00am on Thursday 17th December 2020.
The closing ceremony will take place at 12:00pm on Friday 18th December 2020, prizes will be given for the best models (categories to be confirmed).

We would also encourage you to get your friends and family to submit pictures of their poinsettias (more information can be found at the link above).

Best wishes
April on behalf of the University of Lincoln team.
