Kandace Chimbri and myself were on the Black Women and Publishing Panel together on 26 November, along with Margaret Busby and Wangui wa Goro. It will be uploaded on to the Feminist Library website, shortly. It will be under 'resources.'There is already some good stuff there.

Subject: The Modern PanAfricanist's Journey - Poetry Project

Hello

If you have some time, I hope that you can take a look at a new project
that I am launching in 2021.

I created an app. A Modern Pan Africanists journey (working title) a few
years ago. just before I started my PhD to promote my poetry collection ,
Irki   *www.facebook.com/IrkiPoetryBook
<http://www.facebook.com/IrkiPoetryBook>*
<https://www.facebook.com/IrkiPoetryBookbut>

but it’s been on hold since then. The technology has of course really
developed in the past 5 years, and I have now received a National Lottery
Project  Grant from Arts Council England to upgrade it to an SIV (Selective
Interactive Video). It’s  akin to putting aspects of my research  ( Black
British Publishers and Pan Africanism ) on an app which means that it will
make my research much more accessible.

I still need to raise some funds (through crowdfunding and donations) but I
have enough to get the first stage off the ground to include 100 poets. So
if you’d like to have a wander round the app which is now, the 'prototype'
here is the link. It’s a web based app. and so easy to click and access on
a desktop, otherwise smart phone or tablet.

The Modern Pan-Africanist’s Journey

http://www.sablelitmag.org/mpajweb1/webapp/

As well as clicking on the poet’s info please  click the menu button in the
top left to access the history and resources.

When you have finished browsing please take the survey – by 31 December
2020  midday gmt as Survey Monkey change their user policy on 1 January
2021.

I am open to both content and tech. suggestions as well as  a name for the
app. Please add your comments in the survey which only takes a few minutes
of tick boxing if that is all you have time to do; longer if you want to
include comments.

Thanks so much. Your responses are appreciated!

Subject: Lesson plans and resources for KS2

Greetings,

For circulation

I am pleased to share with you these resources produced by Scholastic. I mentioned back in October (email below) that these would be available although it has taken a bit longer than anticipated.

The resources to accompany The Story of the Windrush are free (although you do need to sign up with your email address to access them).  The Black British history wallchart, endorsed by The Black Curriculum, has a small charge (£2.49 + p&p).

Lesson plans https://resource-bank.scholastic.co.uk/resources/447340

Wall chart https://shop.scholastic.co.uk/products/135855

I hope you will find these resources useful to support teaching of Black British history in schools, homes and more! Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any feedback.

Many thanks and kind regards,

Kandace

Can you spot the difference between the old and new front covers?

A new chapter for me

I want to share some good news with you.  For the past 10+ years I have been researching, writing and self-publishing Black history books for children.  Despite great support and encouragement from people like you, it's been quite difficult to combine writing and publishing especially on top of a full-time job.

I have decided that now is the time to concentrate on writing.  It's hard to do everything so I am pleased to announce that I have signed a 3-book deal with Scholastic UK.

The first book in the series is an improved edition of The Story of the Windrush book.  The new book will be out on 15th October and is already available to pre-order from Book Love, New Beacon Books, Books & Kulture (a new venture in Brent) as well as mainstream bookshops like Waterstones and of course Amazon.

I am already working on Book 2 and will keep you informed via this newsletter.  I'm also pleased that Scholastic are producing wall charts and resources to support the teaching of Black history in schools (and elsewhere!).

I chose Scholastic because they are the world's largest publisher and distributor of children's books, a leading provider of literacy curriculum, professional services, and classroom magazines, and a producer of educational and entertaining children's media.
This means that The Story of the Windrush and the other books in the series will now be easily available to every primary school and library in the UK.
