medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I have seen many manuals for diocesan priests but not with this question in mind. Many can be found in the Usuarium database:

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture As Tom says the bier is often in the chancel and close to the altar in images associated with the Office of the Dead in 14 and 15 C Books of Hours. The bier is a common image, often surrounded by monks/mourners chanting the office

Plate 38, Funeral Mass, in Roger Weick's book Time Sanctified (1988) shows the bier in the chancel & close to the altar.

Hello again,
I thought this query should have a different title from my last. Is there any tradition (12th-14th century) of where biers might be placed in churches prior to burial?  I have an example in which the bier appears to be located near 'the church door'. Any suggestions? The description is from an Icelandic cathedral, which I´m guessing would be the size of a largeish parish church in other parts of Europe.
