Back in January we’ve had mail exchange about ‘digital collections on physical carriers’. Here’s a link to the news item
and final report of the study:

Hi
We may be able to put some data together on older surrogate digitisation project material that we recovered from a variety
of LTO tapes and optical media. However, any data from elsewhere that you obtain and could share would be really useful input to the digital preservation risk model we’re building (official announcement on the next phase to come soon).

Many heritage institutions have digital collections that are stored on physical media, such as floppy Disks, CD-ROMs and other magnetic, optical and electronic media. The risk of losing this information is very large, as carriers are subject to decay and the hardware and software to read the data becomes obsolete.
In 2020, the Dutch Digital Heritage Network wants to map out the challenges in preserving these collections in order to increase the awareness within institutions and collect appropriate tools to safeguard collections. Our first step is to carry out a survey among heritage institutes in order to find out what they have in the archives and how collections are preserved. As we don’t want to invent new wheels, we are looking for examples of similar researches carried out in other countries. Who can help us with ideas, research results, survey methods and other relevant materials?
