I’ve been impressed by the range of subjects this year’s students are covering – they seem to be covering issues that we all find challenging and I think it would be genuinely useful to see the results.

Best wishes,

Maria

Dear Jane, Adrian et al.,

The point Jane made is a good one, and I know that some/many? archives do engage with academic researchers that visit their searchrooms and ask them to contribute to blogs, etc.  However, if I read him correctly, Adrian’s point was specifically relating to the requests that we receive on this listserve from archive course students for completion of surveys relating to the work of the archives profession.  There have probably been around a dozen such requests so far this dissertation season.  The research undertaken presumably sheds useful light on our working practices, engagement with issues, etc., etc.  As Adrian said, there might be a higher degree of engagement with such surveys if colleagues felt that there was a wider benefit than the completion of a dissertation.  Wider participation would hopefully also bring not only quantitative, but also qualitative, benefits for the research.

This is not intended as a criticism of the students concerned, but maybe the archive course directors could think about this issue and build in some feedback to the profession as part of the requirements of the dissertation process where surveys are undertaken through the listserve.  Brief summaries of key findings would be great and might stimulate discussion.

Dear Adrian

I think you make a good point here. Whilst the academy within which researchers are studying may have strict requirements about publication – perhaps aimed more at post-graduate students -  it is legitimate for archive services to encourage the growing numbers of academic users at all levels to talk about their approach to using original material. One way is to invite them to write articles for the  newsletter, blog or website of the archives they visit and to contribute to short pieces on social media. This implies an opportunity for more partnership with users, especially as we look for ways to foster the revealing of ‘hidden’ histories of people from BAME backgrounds, LGBTQ perspectives, women and other intersections.

Subject: The dissemination of the fruits of archives-related dissertations

Dear fellow readers

I wonder whether we might be informed whether some of the various archives-related dissertations which their authors invite us to contribute to, through the completion of surveys, are, so far as GDPR and other issues allow, made available in some form to a wider audience.  I am unaware whether the universities in question retain such dissertations or whether, in particular, abstracts of their  findings are made available in a relevant journal and / or website. Those invited to complete surveys might be encouraged to respond if they knew that the fruits of such research might be shared in some form.

Best wishes

Adrian Allan
